NTV Employee Resigns, Leaves For ‘Kyeyo’

One of NTV’s longest serving cameraman, Peter Serwanga has finally thrown in the towel at the Serena-based station.

“Throughout our lives we go through many changes including changes of home, city, country or work. But changes are needed in our lives to improve and gain more experience. Yet there are some changes that generate sadness or make us feel nostalgic. Working beside you have been a wonderful experience, I now have time to take a new direction. From heart I wish the best to you my friends, I will never forget the 6 years have worked at NTV-Uganda are very special, and each one of you have helped to make it so,” reads a statement to his workmates.

 

“With your encouragement and support, I not only performed my best, but also learned so many new things. I genuinely thank and appreciate the affection and camaraderie that you all have shown to me.”

 

Sserwanga, who had been part of NTV’s media team that travelled in September to the US for the UNAA (Uganda North American Association convention), says he wants to start a new life in the ‘land of endless opportunities’.

 

As you read this, he is in the US, staying in Burlington. Apparently ladies aren’t giving him breathing time after getting to know he is in America.

As we get closer to what is most likely to be the concert of the year, Tusker Malt Lager gave revelers something to look forward to as they hosted a Kool & The Gang listeners’ party at Liquid Silk.

Myko Ouma with his Jazz skills coupled with a touch of contemporary world music was one of the performers of the night who never disappointed his fans because he gave them a real performance which left them yarning more from him.

Myko Ouma & Swahili Nation Among Curtain For Kool & The Gang

Top Ugandan artistes have been selected to curtain raise at the upcoming Kool & The Gang concert in Kampala on the 12th November at the Kololo Airstrip Grounds.

Jazz sensation and Saxophonist Isaiah Katumwa, guitar maestro Myko Ouma and Hip Hop and R&B group Swahili Nation have been selected to perform at the Kool & The Gang concert.

 

Powered by Tusker Malt Lager and organised by Talent Africa and Silk Events, the concert will be a 70’s themed dress code event at the Kololo Airstrip Grounds in what will be the biggest disco themed production in Uganda’s history.

 

Isaiah Katumwa who is no stranger to performing alongside big name artistes, will be looking to lighten up the disco with his Saxophone blares. Being one of the engines behind the continued establishment of Jazz music as one of the leading genres in Uganda, he will be playing to thousands of Jazz lovers at the concert.

 

Myko Ouma is the other big name artiste who will be bringing his Jazz skills coupled with a touch of contemporary world music to the concert. “It will be a great moment for me. I grew up listening to Kool & The Gang and curtain raising for them is something that was beyond my imagination.” He said.

 

Sweden-based R&B and Hip hop music group, Swahili Nation, are also set to perform at the concert. Boasting of songs like; “Malaika”, “Nyama”, and “Hakuna Matata” which have earned the group a Channel O Music Awards nomination.

Sizzaman’s New Song Trolls Chameloen’s Brother & Bigeye

‘Gababugumye’ is a luganda word loosely translated to mean being on the hot seat. It rose to fame recently when musician Jose Chameleone used it while attacking his older brother following his comments on the arrest of Team No Sleep manager, Jeff Kiwa.

The ex-fiance to singer Bigeye, Don Zella reiterated the same to refer to her ex, who she thought was in a tight situation.

 

Well, self-declared music dictionary has hit the studio and recorded a song out of the word. Similar to its previous usage, he uses ‘Gababugumye’ to troll Chameleone’s elder brother and Bigeye.

 

The song boasts of a rich lyrical package that he is famously known for. The lyrics are knitted together with humour, adding more fun to a listener.

Music critics believe it’s going to be the next biggest song in clubs. Like many of his songs, the song has hard dancehall beats that are at one time fused with beats from Timaya’s monster hit, Sanko.

Coke Studio Africa Artistes Bag 28 Nominations At 2016 MAMAs

For another year, Coke Studio Africa artistes have emerged as frontrunners in African entertainment, scooping 28 nominations in total for the 2016 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) that will be taking place in Johannesburg, South Africa on 22 October.

With four nominations, Kenyan award-winning group Sauti Sol leads the bunch of 21 nominees from Coke Studio Africa 4, followed by Nigerian Dancehall prince Patoranking and South African rapper Emtee, both with three nominations.

 

Patoranking is nominated for Best Male Artist and Best Collaboration for the hit song No Kissing featuring Sarkodie.

 

Sauti Sol are nominated in the categories of Best Group and Best Collaboration for Unconditionally Bae featuring Coke Studio Africa 3 Tanzanian singer Alikiba.

 

They have also been nominated for Artist of the Year and Song of the Year. Coke Studio Africa 4 Producer from South Africa, DJ Maphorisa has also been nominated in Best Collaboration for Soweto Baby featuring Wikzid and DJ Buckz.

 

Rising South African hip hop artist Emtee features on the finale episode of Coke Studio Africa season 4 in song collaborations with the show’s guest international star: Trey Songz alongside selected African superstars. He has been nominated for Best Hip Hop Artist, Song of the Year and Best Breakthrough Artist.

 

Coke Studio Africa newcomers are also on the spotlight. Toofan from Togo and Navy Kenzo from Tanzania are nominated in the category of Best Group. Mozambican songstress Lizha James has been nominated for Best Lusophone Artist, with the Best Live act category pulling in three Coke Studio Africa artists: Flavour (Nigeria), Stonebwoy (Ghana) and Eddy Kenzo (Uganda).

Patoranking

Yemi Alade will battle it out with Sauti Sol for the Artist of the Year award. In the Listeners Choice Award, Lij Michael, The Kansoul, Yamoto Band, Kiss Daniel and EL have all been nominated. Nigerian long time collaborators Falz and Simi, both got nominated alongside Emtee for Best Breakthrough Act, while Toofan and DRC’s Serge Beynaud have been nominated in the Best Francophone Artist category.

After four grueling days of boot camp training sessions, expert coaching and tough challenges, we are excited to reveal the Top 3 who have made it through to the public vote.

 

The Top 3 finalists, as selected by the panel of expert judges including Thando Thabethe, are: Carissa Cupido from South Africa, Charlie Karumi from Kenya and Karen Paida Mukwedeya from Zimbabwe.

 

As of Monday, 10 October the public will have the opportunity to choose TLC’s Next Great Presenter by voting for their favourite from the three finalists. Space Lounge Club, which is an exclusive VIP club is opening this Friday. Formerly known as Rouge, the joint has completely been revamped to give it a sassy look.

 

But before it opens to the public, the media were the first people to enjoy its cool ambience and flashy seats. They were hosted Friday by the club’s management, where they were treated to an open bar.

 

Addressing the media, the club’s manager, Keneth Ndejjo said that the club will be open seven days a week, with entrance for some days being free. The only days on which one will have to pay are Fridays and Saturdays. Entrance fee is Shs30k.

 

After the address, journalists who are football fans enjoyed a football match between Chelsea Fc and Liverpool Fc on the club’s giant screen.

Hima Cement And Chinese Firm Guangzhou Dongsong Ink MOU

Hima Cement signed a 5 year Memorandum of Understanding with Chinese firm, Guangzhou Dongsong Energy Group (Uganda) Company Limited, to supply Cement for the Chinese firm which is set to develop the huge phosphates deposits in Eastern Uganda.

“The purpose of this MOU is to establish the relationship between Hima and GZDS. This cooperation of both parties shall cover the project of construction of the phosphate plant and steel mill plant, and any other projects within the Sukulu Industrial Park.” Said Daniel Pettersson, the Country CEO of Hima Cement

The parties will execute a definitive Sales Agreement whereHima Cement will supply the required cement for the project; to the tune of over 40,000 tonnes of cement for the first two years.

The Sukulu Phosphate Project located in Tororo district in Eastern Uganda will manufacture key products such as phosphate fertilizers, steel products,rare earth minerals and generate electricity with the capacity of 12 megawatts

Commenting on this partnership, the General Manager of Guangzhou Dongsong Energy Group Mr. Zheng Xu said that the MOU opens up opportunities for a mutually beneficial engagement with Hima Cement; creating long term benefits for both parties.

Guangzhou Dongsong Energy Group (Uganda) Company Limited is expected to start production on the $620 million Sukulu Phosphate Project in December 2016 and will employ more than 1,200 Ugandans.

“We are proud to be making a significant contribution to an investment of this magnitude that will create many opportunities for the local population,” said Pettersson.

Subscribers Can Now Borrow Airtime More Than Once On Airtel’s Beerako

For the first time in the Ugandan telecommunications industry, subscribers will be able to borrow airtime more than once, thanks to Airtel Uganda’s newly revamped ‘Beerako’ service.

‘Beerako’ is a service that allows customers to borrow airtime to call, text and even buy data for their personal use and pay back whenever they recharge their accounts. With the recent improvement of the service, subscribers can now borrow a maximum of two loans within their qualified limit, with each loan having its own grace period.

“By simply dialing *155#, our subscribers will always be able to stay in touch by calling, messaging or buying data to access social media,” commented Remy Tugume, Airtel Uganda’s New Product Development Manager.

Seedstars World Is Coming To Kampala To Find The Best Startups In Uganda

Seedstars World, the global seed-stage startup competition for emerging markets and fast-growing startup scenes, is returning to Uganda on September 30, 2016.

In line with its mission to place the spotlight on entrepreneurs from emerging markets, Seedstars World is travelling to more than 65 countries this year to identify the best seed-stage entrepreneurs and provide them with an opportunity to win up to USD 1 million and network with investors and mentors from around the world. Its previous participants have raised over USD 61M collectively, providing employment to more than 800 people worldwide.

The companies selected to pitch at the Seedstars Kampala event need to be less than 2 years old, have raised less than USD 500,000 in funding and have built a minimum viable product, ideally with existing traction. The Seedstars World team is searching for one additional criterion – the startup’s regional and global scalability. With a strong network of international partners such as Inmarsat, INADEM, Standard Bank and Deloitte, Seedstars World is looking for smart startups that solve regional issues and develop profitable products for the global market, to support their regional businesses and growth.

Airtel Uganda Announces Exciting Phone Deals

In a bid to reaffirm its position as the Smartphone network, Airtel Uganda has announced a new wave of discounts on its low – end smartphones.

Ranging from just 35,000 shillings, the smartphones on discount include the Airtel i4+, Airtel Champion, Huawei Y625, Y560, Y360 and Y336 – all coupled with 1GB of data free for the first month.

Commenting about the discount wave, Airtel UgandaDevice Manager –Gabriel Isingomasaid “Airtel Ugandahas always been a trailblazer when it comes to offeringour customers the latest high and low – end smartphones as well as different value prepositions on our products and services.”

“As the Smartphone network, we intend to connect as many customers as possible with our affordable and fully functional handsets, especially the youth who might not yet be earning enough to afford our high end devices,” she added.

The discount wave comes a few weeks after the telecom introduced the recently released Samsung S7 and S7 Edge smartphones bundled with 25GB of data and a free Gear VR.

The phone deals are available at all Airtel Uganda outlets countrywide.

Nissan Reveals What’s Exciting Football Fans Ahead Of UEFA Champions League

With the return of the most exciting football tournament on the planet today, Nissan, official global automotive sponsor of the UEFA Champions League, has uncovered the moments, players and teams that fans are most excited to see this season.

To do this, Nissan has conducted independent research among 5 000 UEFA fans, testing them on their levels of excitement. This is a particular area of expertise for the makers of exciting cars such as the Nissan GT-R.

The second annual Nissan Excitement Index has kicked off by revealing Leicester City FC’s arrival into the tournament is the most anticipated moment of the season, with 50% of fans looking forward to this team’s debut. Despite all the excitement around the club’s debut in the competition, only 1% of fans believe they actually stand a chance of winning the coveted trophy.

When asked to select their top three players, Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored the decisive penalty in last season’s final in Milan and picked up the UEFA Best Player in Europe award, was also voted as the most exciting player (55%). He overtook FC Barcelona rival Lionel Messi – the favourite from 2015 – who was voted second most exciting (45%). UEFA Euro 2016’s player of the tournament Antoine Greizmann was selected as the third most exciting (33%).

Following a busy summer on the transfer market, the Nissan Excitement Index also asked fans to share the top three movements that got them most excited. Alvaro Morata’s arrival at Real Madrid CF and Gonzalo Higuain’s transfer to Juventus FC were jointly selected (40%) as the most thrilling transfers of the summer. They were closely followed by Mario Gotze’s shift from FC Bayern Munich to Borussia Dortmund (35%).

When it came to predictions for the forthcoming season football fans believed FC Barcelona (23%) will triumph over their rivals Real Madrid CF (19%) when it comes to lifting the famous trophy in Cardiff, Wales, next June.

Following findings in the 2015-16 Nissan Excitement Index, that fans of this beautiful game get more excited about football than getting engaged (16%), graduating (24%) or securing promotion or pay rise (21%). One in 10 even claimed they would miss the birth of their own child if it meant getting the chance to attend a UEFA Champions League match.

Throughout the course of the upcoming season Nissan will continue to delve into the science of what makes football so exciting. After partnering with sports science experts at Loughborough University in London during the 2015-16 season to create a scientific formula for an exciting football match, Nissan will continue to share data on the goals, players and games which keep us on the edge of our seat.

Hima Cement Inks Ush84 Million Pact With Pearl Rally

Hima Cement Ltd, last week announced a USD25, 000 (Ush84million) sponsorship of the 2016 edition of the prestigious Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally slated for September 16 – 18, 2016.

Speaking during a press briefing convened to relay the announcement, Mr. Allan Ssemakula, the Hima Cement Marketing Director disclosed that the contribution will also go towards implementation of a Road Safety Awareness Campaign conducted with the Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda’s (FMU).

“Hima Cement is an organization that is keen on road safety. Now that we are sponsoring rally, a prestigious sport which both directly and indirectly influences behavior on the road, we thought it wise to have a stand on road safety alongside our sponsorship. The campaign will run until the end of the year,” Ssemakula said.

Adding: “We are proud to support FMU which has a longstanding tradition of carrying out road safety campaigns in partnership with the Uganda Police and Ministry of Works; most recently on Masaka Road; which is one of the areas of concern for the whole country. Hima Cement is glad to partner with FMU in this regard because Health and Safety, on and off the road, is a core value of our organization.”

Hima Cement Limited is the sponsor of rally driver, Ambrose Byona also known as ‘Omunyetto’. Byona in his Mitsubishi Evo 9 and navigator, Derrick Lubambula will be taking part in the Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally 2016. Hima Cement has also in the past sponsored legendary rally ace, Chipper Adams.

Mr. Dusman Okee, the FMU President lauded Hima Cement’s timely contribution saying that road safety was one of the aspects of the sport that the federation was looking at strengthening.

“We are happy that Hima Cement has come on board to support not only the rally (Pearl of Africa Rally) but also FMU’s road safety campaign. As you may know, Uganda is ranked in the top ten countries in the world with the highest number of road accidents; most of them attributed to over speeding and reckless driving. We have taken it upon ourselves to sensitize road users on proper driver etiquette; for drivers to check their vehicles before every journey, to have enough rest, plan their journeys and take regular breaks, to wear seatbelts, lookout for other road users and most importantly not to over-speed. This contribution from Hima Cement and their expertise in Road safety will help us in taking the road safety message even further,” Okee stated.

He added that FMU was happy that companies such as Hima Cement had agreed to bolster the image of the Pearl of Africa Rally; a move he said would help the event regain its past glory as one of the best organized events on the continent.

The Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally is one of the main motorsport events in the country. It is part of the National Rally Championship and the FIA African Rally Championship (ARC).

During the 2015 edition of the Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally, Hima Cement injected Ush20 million into the event. The cement maker has been part of the sport for many years having been the title sponsor of the Pearl of Africa Rally between 2000 and 2004.

MTN Uganda Launched Helloworld, A Very Cost Effective Roaming Solution

MTN Uganda last week launched HelloWorld, a roaming service that enables MTN customers to enjoy discounted calling, SMS and internet rates while travelling to their favorite destinations around the world.

MTN has categorized various countries into price-based zones, “Zone One” and “Zone Two”, when you dial *160*55#from your MTN line. In countries under Zone One, customers can subscribe for HelloWorld at UGX. 1,000/- per day, while the subscription rate is UGX. 500/- per day in Zone Two.

All a customer needs to do is subscribe to the zone with the partner network in their selected country, for the number of days they will be travelling; after which they will be able to enjoy discounted calls within that country, to any network in Uganda or anywhere else in the world. MTN HelloWorld subscribers can also send SMS at discounted rates,receive SMS for free and best of all enjoy affordable internet straight from their smartphones while roaming.

“In addition to affordable roaming rates, MTN HelloWorld offers peace of mind and convenience to travelling customers.We are delighted to have introduced a solution that will allow customers to keep their MTN number on to stay in touch without the need to get a new SIM card or buy a calling card in every country visit,” said MTN Uganda’s Chief Marketing Officer, Mapula Bodibe.

“A customer doesn’t always have to subscribe every time they travel to a different country. If your trip covers countries within the same zone, you do not need to subscribe again. However, if your trip covers countries in more than one zone, you will need to subscribe to the two zones to enjoy the service,” added Ms. Bodibe.

For customers subscribed to MTN HelloWorld, data is charged as low as 0.4/- per KB (about 400/- per MB) to 2/- per KB (about 2000/- per MB), a much more favorable alternative to other roaming solutions. Furthermore, subscribers do not have to depend on Wi-Fi hotspots to keep their internet connections active.

This service is not available with Kenya, Rwanda and South Sudan partner networks due to the availability of the already discounted One Network Area roaming service, that enables you to enjoy special tariffs on calls, SMS and internet within East Africa.
